Area Lodging

Primland Resort, 18 miles from Mabry Mill, is an elegant golf and hunting resort on a stunning 14,000 acres. For a more casual local alternative, Hotel Floyd, 22 miles from Mabry Mill, offers spacious funky rooms in the “Floyd style”. Check area tourism sites for area B&Bs if you are inclined toward quaint. Remember, this is a beautiful remote area where “30 minutes” equals a close neighbor—you will enjoy the drives as well as the ride!

Schedule

Saturday September 7—we encourage out of town visitors who plan to spend Saturday night to gather at one of the area’s casual restaurants in Floyd. Parkway Grille is our favorite and Dogtown Pizza has excellent brick oven pizza.

Sunday September 8

  • Riders planning to ride the entire 79 kilometers (aka The Big Dogs) depart the Mabry Mill back parking lot at 8:00, behind the Mill.
  • Riders planning to ride the second half of the ride join the Big Dog group at the Mabry Mill back parking lot around 10:30.
  • Expect SAG stops, as well as opportunities to catch a ride at Groundhog Mountain and on Canning Factory Road.
  • After the ride, return to Flynt’s house, about 15 minutes from Mabry Mill, for a casual hearty lunch and big glass of your favorite beverage to celebrate the Chuck Flynt Birthday Ride!

Options for out of town Visitors who want more biking

  • Consider arriving early or staying late to ride the New River Trail, a 57 mile rails to trail ride in southwest Virginia near the Flynt’s home. This flat ride along the New River (the country’s oldest river) features over 30 bridges and two tunnels, plus beautiful views of the New River and the Southern Appalachians. The surface is a well maintained cinder track appropriate for hybrid bikes or, in good weather, road bikes with fat tires. Shuttle service is available, as well as bike rental. Diane and Chuck can provide details.
  • For a luxurious weekend, consider staying at Primland, a 14,000 acre resort with a famous golf course, hunting and an amazing spa just 30 minutes from the Flynt’s house and 20 minutes from the beginning of the Birthday Ride.
  • A tour of the Foggy Ridge Cider orchards is also an option, though Diane might put you to work in the orchard.
  • The best airport options are Greensboro, NC, Roanoke, VA or Charlotte, NC. Co-ordinate your trip with Travel Agent, Chuck, for the best itinerary.
